FOREST RECREATION AND VISITOR MAPS "Visitor Maps" for each national forest and grassland provide forest-wide information on attractions, facilities, services, and opportunities. National Forest Visitor Maps are at a smaller scale than topographic quadrangle maps and typically do not show contours. They are best used to view an entire national forest and are great to use when driving through or planning a trip to the forest, as they display recreational sites, campgrounds, public information sites, and other attractions in the forest. Wilderness maps and special area maps are used to illustrate specific recreation opportunities over specific areas, and provide information appropriate to each map's theme, such as how to obtain Wilderness use permits. These maps typically provide more detail than the Forest Visitor map and are used for hiking and other activities. Forest visitor maps, Wilderness maps, and topographic quadrangle maps may be purchased at any Ranger Station of the Sequoia National Forest. Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) are available free of charge at any Ranger Station. These maps show the roads and trails in the Sequoia National Forest that are designated for motor vehicle use and which ones are restricted during seasonal closures. There are three maps or one for each ranger district. Vehicle use on roads is allowed only on the routes shown on the Motor Vehicle Use Map. The MVUMs can also be viewed on and downloaded from the Travel Management webpage. TO VIEW FOREST MAPS ONLINE The Pacific Southwest Region provides Forest Visitor Maps for online viewing. Indexes of the maps are divided into sections that each link to a detailed view (JPEG image). Printable versions of forest-wide maps can be downloaded as PDF images with free Adobe Reader software. Download time will vary depending on the internet connection speed and the file size. The JPEG images are 300 to 900kb in size and the PDF images are 5.0 to 39.0mb. TO PURCHASE A PRINTED MAP The original, high quality forest visitor maps on paper or plastic include visitor information and full color photographs. Maps of the Sequoia National Forest, the Giant Sequoia National Monument, and other selected forest, Wilderness, and national park maps in California may be purchased in person at all Ranger Stations and the Forest Supervisor's Office, 1839 South Newcomb Street, Porterville, CA 93257.
